Rodolfo Morales was born in Oaxaca in 1925. Recognized as one of Mexico’s 20th century masters, his works were inspired by dreams of Ocotlán, the small town where he was born. The color palette he used, the colonial architecture and the characters that inhabit his paintings call to mind this part of Oaxaca and much of its folklore. The women in these paintings and prints seem to be engaged in a silent communication with one another and their surroundings. These strong silent figures are inspired by the nostalgic memories of his youth and the keen recollections of his mother and aunts—women who fully comprehended and celebrated the strength of their local beliefs and customs, and who ultimately passed on this understanding to Morales. In 1992, after much international success, the artist created the Rodolfo Morales Foundation. This foundation is dedicated to the preservation and reconstruction of historic buildings, the promotion of regional arts and culture, and the use of technology in the Ocotlán public school system.
