Leo Politi (1908-1996)
Born in Fresno, California on November 21, 1908, Leo Politi moved to Italy with his family at the age of 6.  After receiving his art training at the National Art Institute at Monza (Milan), he returned to California in the 1930s.  He settled in the Bunker Hill area of Los Angeles and worked at Olvera Street painting portraits of tourists.  He was art editor of Viking Press and illustrator of the weekly "Jack and Jill."  He was awarded the Caldecott Medal, the nation's highest honor to authors of children's books, for MISSION BELL and SONG OF THE SWALLOWS.  There is a library in Fresno and an elementary school in Los Angeles that are named after him.  In addition to his paintings, he wrote and illustrated numerous books and painted several murals.
