This was an illustration for El Sombrerón, originally a puppet theater production and later a published edition. Zalce's illustrations were sold to help the Taller de Gráfica Popular repay debts accrued during the war years. The Met owns this woodcut as part of their collection.  In very good condition.  Frame is contemporary.  Pencil signed. 

Alfredo Zalce Torres was a Mexican artist and contemporary of Diego Rivera, David Siqueiros and other muralists. He worked primarily as a painter, sculptor, and engraver.  He also taught and was involved in a number of institutions of culture and education.
